Fraud Detection GAN API
Test synthetic augmentation without contaminating the evidence used to judge it.
Separate generation from scoring
A synthetic-training-data service and a transaction-scoring service perform different jobs. Keep their permissions, interfaces, and acceptance criteria separate. The guide below focuses on defensive augmentation experiments rather than promising a production detection capability.
Start with the action a score would support: prioritizing review, contributing to verification, or informing another controlled process. Define the label, its availability time, and the consequences of false alerts and missed cases before choosing an augmentation method.
Protect the data boundary
Fit the generator and preprocessing only within the permitted training partition. Consider time and entity separation that matches the question the evaluation needs to answer. Synthetic examples derived from a contaminated training process do not repair the experiment.
Use a real, appropriate holdout for the final operational question. Compare a GAN-assisted setup against simple baselines under comparable conditions. Choose augmentation settings and thresholds on validation data rather than repeatedly selecting against the final test.
Translate results into review decisions carefully
Assess precision, recall, alert volume, and meaningful slices under the selected protocol. Keep uncertainty and label limitations visible. An offline result should not become an unsupported claim of prevented losses or guaranteed fraud-detection accuracy.
Before consequential deployment, evaluate the actual decision workflow and fallback behavior. Monitor data availability and drift, preserve model provenance, and keep generation infrastructure isolated from unrestricted production actions.
Boundary
Training-only synthesis and fitting.
Comparison
Fair baselines and unchanged test conditions.
Decision
Thresholds tied to a reviewed workflow.
Questions for this workflow
Will GAN augmentation always improve fraud detection?
No improvement should be assumed. Treat augmentation as an experiment and compare it fairly with simpler alternatives on an appropriate holdout.
Should the final test contain synthetic fraud rows?
When the question is performance on real future transactions, keep the final real holdout representative and separate from synthetic training augmentation.
